2018 Around the Island results
The 2019 series will continue the same day and format as previous years. Every Sunday morning, over 8 weeks in single sculls – tubs or racers – racing on the “Barwon Mile”.
The series will kick off with the ‘Round the Island’ Time Trial over 3km, and the following week we contest ‘Machine Gun Sprints’ (2 X 500m). These are to help the handicapper establish boat speeds so that handicapped races can run over the remaining six weeks.
Entries will be divided into racing boats and tubs with heats of approximately eight competitors. The goal of the handicapper is have all eight boats in a race finish at the same time. Points are awarded for participating over the first 2 weeks and then points are awarded for finish position in subsequent weeks. The highest points scorers in Tub boats and Racing boats will be the Series winners.
The final event of Geelong Winter Sculling will be the ‘Sculler’s Head of the Barwon’, a 4.5km race from Queen’s park to the finish of the Barwon Mile – also handicapped but against the speed of the World Champion in your category. (Referred to as Prognostic Speed Handicapping)
Following each day’s racing, all competitors and supporters are welcome back at Corio Bay Rowing Club for a celebratory drink, complimentary toasted sandwiches, heat awards and point score.
The series presentations will occur at the post race festivities for the Sculler’s Head of the Barwon.
